Stray Kids – Whaaat?

The first time I heard about K-pop I was teaching high school kids at a private school. And at that time for sure I mocked them because they were fans of people singing in a language they had no idea what the band was talking about.

Six years later I caught myself enjoying songs from some k-pop bands, especially Stray Kids. Their videoclips are awesome, the way they dance in their live concerts is hypnotic and Felix’s voice is just magnificent. Not to mention the beuaty of Hyunjin, which is also magnetic.

I remember being at the sofa reading my book while my kid was watching some videos from YouTube when suddenly I heard ‘Maniac’ being sung and I took a glimpse at the TV and saw those Korean boys dancing in a way that I couldn’t help myself. I asked my daughter who those guys were and she told me ‘The Stray Kids, mom! I love them’. Wow. First, I had no idea my five-year-old girl would listen to that kind of music, second, she knew who they were and she had feelings about it. Whaaaat??? And third: let me take a look on other videoclips. Kabum! I was delighted by the coreography and the melody, once I have no idea what they are saying in their lyrics.

After a while I started looking for the lyrics translations and as a teacher, I had to ask myself: why is it so addictive? I also asked some of my students the reason for them enjoying K-pop and none of them could answer accurately why. BTS, Blackpink, Twice, Stray Kids. These are only a few of the numerous k-pop bands. Watching their crowded concerts I keep questioning myself: what is behind of all this?

Now, I have two tickets from their concert in Brazil for April. My Goodness, I do love them!

Can you tell me why?
